World Peace Day with SOS Children

On September 25, 2016, the National Youth Committee paid a visit to SOS Children’s Village to celebrate the World Peace Day.

As the world was celebrating the Peace Day, my team wanted to put a smile on children’s faces, and give them hope that they belong to the bigger society. Therefore we took time to collect toys, sanitary items, and other stuff that kids need on a regular basis. But, this was so little comparing to what we wanted to offer. The Joy, Hope, Friendship and Fun.

The team took off at around 11:00 am and the journey was more than enjoyable. We danced and sang all along. This is the most fun part about traveling with the Girl Guides. We are never bored. And the age doesn’t matter, we are all young!

Arrived at the centre, the director was really excited to receive “Abakobwa beza” – good girls. Every week he welcomes young leaders who entertain children, so he knows very well Guiding. The director gave us a warm welcome while introducing us to the SOS background and programmes. We thereafter presented him the gifts we bought for the children.

Outside kids were impatient to meet us and spend a great afternoon with Abagide. On the calendar were games such as, flying disc game (freesbe), jumping race while in a sack, who can make the longest line?, water on the spoon race, filling water in the bottle battle, running, colouring, laying the puzzles pieces, and so many more.

Stop the violence (STV) was also one on the agenda. As AGR was launching the #TeamGirl campaign, we initiated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and stressed SDG 5 “Gender Equality”. Girls of 14 and above went through the Voices against Violence curriculum with AGR facilitators. Most of them came from families where violence was prevalent, so they learnt very well about the subject, and understood their role to prevent violence. They committed to be the voice for other girls living in centres, orphanages and refugee camps, the plan they will execute with the support of Girl Guides of Gicumbi District.

I felt really proud to be a part of this fun day. It gave me a hint on how small actions can impact someone’s life. And it doesn’t matter how much you invest in, a simple gesture is enough.

World Peace Day is one of AGR core annual days. Last year, all Rwandan girl guides celebrated the day with Peace One Day at Amahoro National Stadium.
