In 2011 the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts launched its’ first ever global advocacy campaign â€˜Stop the Violence – speak out for girls’ rights’.

Rwanda Girl Guides joined the campaign since 2011. All the activities aim to end violence against girls and young women through five key pillars:

  1. Global awareness campaign

  2. Education programme

  3. Research and policy development

  4. Lobbying

  5. National and community campaigns

A major part of the educational component of the Stop the Violence campaign is Voices against Violence, a non-formal education curriculum developed in partnership with UN Women.

The curriculum is divided into different age groups – for early, younger, middle and older years – with age-appropriate activities on different forms of violence for each group. All ages look at topics which include gender stereotyping and gender discrimination, domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual bullying. Older groups look at topics such as informed consent, sexual harassment, relationship abuse, sexualisation, female genital mutilation and forced and early marriage.

Rwandan Girl Guides have been working on the ground to eliminate violence against girls and women over many decades and have contributed significant expertise and thought leadership into our global campaign.

The Stop the Violence campaign has been an evidence of what we do and what we can do. It helped us win countless partnerships as we also operate at the grassroots level. It greatly reinforced our visibility and trust in the community, and therefore it has put us at the heart of other girl serving organizations in Rwanda.

The campaign is still going on with trainings of trainers who deliver the programme. We do advocacy by raising awareness of girls' and women's rights, teaching younger generations to stop harm and abuse, and promoting family values.

Our members also take part in national events to prevent and tackle Gender Based Violence, primarly by partnering with the Ministry of Genderand Family Promotion and the Rwanda National Police. The International Day of the Girl celebrated every October 11 and the 16 Days of Activism are our major occasions to ractify our cause and call for more investments in girls and women.

From May 6-11, 2013, 43 participants from 28 countries participated in the "Stop the Violence" training. Along with the opportunity to foster leadership and advocacy skills, participants took part in a community visit to see local initiatives firsthand and they have learned more about gender-based violence through non-formal educational activities and through the experiences of Rwanda Girl Guides
