12+ PROGRAMME

 

12+ Programme is a mentorship 10 month programme that enables 11 year old girls to become informed decision-makers. Piloted by Rwanda Girl Guides Association in 2011, 12+ Programme is being implemented countrywide with the objective of empowering 112,000 girls, over a period of 3.5 years (2012 – 2016). 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Expected results:

 

  • increased self-esteem amongst girls participating in the programme;

 

  • improvements in the social, health and economic assets of 112,000 girls, including friendships,

 

  • increased knowledge on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and HIV (Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus), delayed sexual debut, knowledge on money and saving;

 

  • support for girls’ participation in the programme across the communities;

 

  • less tolerance amongst girls for gender based violence (GBV), and implementation of girl focused policies at national level. 

 

12+ method:

 

Safe spaces: once per week, girls meet in a safe space, where they can develop friendships and social capital


Mentoring: sessions are led by young leaders named "mentors" over a period of 10 months


Training: 12+ girls are acquire knowledge on reproductive health and life-skills, violence prevention training and financial literacy
