Amahoro Amani is a joint program between the Scout and Guide Associations of Burundi, North Kivu, South Kivu and Rwanda funded by Swedish Scout and Guide Association "Scouterna".

History background

The Great Lakes Region of Africa has suffered from unrest conflicts and civil wars for a longtime. Burundi, Eastern Congo and Rwanda have witnessed poverty and massive loss of lives.

In 2005, the Scout and Guide associations decided to lead change in the region through "Amahoro Amani" programme.

How it started

It started as a two-year cooperation betwen eight Scout and Guide associations of Burundi, North Kivu, South Kivu and Rwanda. These organizations mobilised thousands of young people who led a very good example of cooperation through dialogues and community work to promote peace.

Mission and mission

Amahoro Amani has a vision to shape “A youth that promotes peace and unity for sustainable development in the Great Lakes region”. Our mission is therefore to “Mobilize and put into action several thousand of young people to fight against prejudices and contribute to the achievement of lasting peace in the Great Lakes.”

Amahoro Amani method

Just like any other scout or guide activity, Amahoro Amani uses a non-formal education to resolve community issues and promote peace. Peace Clubs use a handbook to carry local actions following eight well known steps:

  1. Identify existing problems in the community

  2. Select a problem to resolve as a team

  3. Set up goals

  4. Make a plan to achieve the goals

  5. Implement the plan

  6. Monitor and evaluate

  7. Share the success

  8. Celebrate the success!
